There is no point to end up structuring a payola schedule to GF if all was well on the yield front. AMD publicly put the blame on GF, but most forget that the Dresden GF fab is full of former AMD employees, isn't it?
So what is the real problem?
The problem is that AMD thought it could work a Foundry model in the same way as ARM and others. Good luck on that.
By the way, Jo Ann Feeney has been definitely been super excited about AMD's prospects in the past, and failed to follow through. I could better her predictions with a money and a dartboard.

Something just does not compute at all.

If GF has solved all the 32 nM SOI Llano yield problems, then why would AMD have just paid GF over $430 MILLION DOLLARS to walk away from a commitment to buy their wafers from GF ?]

Of course - where is the mention that a year ago GF claimed there were no yield issues - and every little process thing was hunky dory?

Clearly, GF is wordsmithing and lying. Things are not great at GF - and their customers are bailing out as fast as they can.

Once again, the media journalists avoid the logic of the situation and swallow the baloney hook line and STINKER.

And Jo Ann Feeney - gimme a break ! She's been predicting breakout earnings and market share gains for AMD for the past 5 years ! What is with her blind obsession with AMD? Is Hector paying her?

Hey ! Where are the sanity checks?

This sounds like something that knowledgeable electronics engineers and managers have bee asking for for 20 years or more. It sounds like it was more industry created and supported and not averwhelmed by the academic crowd, who don't seem to get that the best training is "hands on" training. Good work, Keep it up

What a sad loss for the tech world! It's truly amazing to step back and try to remember life before iPods, iPhones, and iPads. I refuse to even imagine not having my MacBook Pro! Steve Jobs' achievements really nail that connection between amazing intuitive function and downright supercool style. Are the products necessary? For some of us, absolutely yes. Others, maybe not so much. But they do one thing for sure: Make life a little bit easier, a whole lot more vivid, and way more enjoyable. And who wouldn't love to be able to do that for the world? Thank you, Steve Jobs!

Dear Sir

I am a Technology Engineer, working with a semiconductor based reputable supplier.
As per your article, there are currently lots of opportunities in semiconductor feild available in Abu Dhabi also and are expected to grow heavily in near future. Currently, I am also looking for semiconductor based opportunities in Abu Dhabi where my profile can suit best and my experience can be admired. I wish to shift to Abu Dhabi as my husband is settled there. If required, 30% of travel is ok for me.
Can you please update me on ongoing activities there where my profile can fit or review my resume for any best opportunity available.

The businessinsider.com article you allow Ellis to cite is totally bogus, and stems from a flight of fancy mentioned in a Wired magazine article, cited in the businessinsider.com article. If you read the Wired article (http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/06/chips-oy-spies-want-to-hack-proof-circuits/#more-49990) you see that the counterfeiting involved no back doors and the chips were the usual type: marked differently to get a higher price for the wrong die. Another famous author, Dan Brown who wrote the bestselling "DaVinci Code", also wrote a really bad technothriller called "Digital Fortress" that focused on a code-breaking supercomputer built from 500,000 "hand-soldered" processors. The silicon in that machine caught fire (very hard to burn silicon). Both authors prove that technology is dangerous in the wrong hands.

This was a nice summary. For those of us that were not able to attend SEMICON West this year, this helps fill in a lot of the blanks.

I had heard that there was still a lot of uncertainty regarding the timing and targeted node for 450mm and the article confirms it. Such variability makes it hard to prioritize R&D funding, for both chipmakers and the industry. Hopefully some clarity will happen soon.

Keep up the great work!

Dave, Ed et al

Fantastic to see SemiMD start successfully, and to see so many 'all stars' from the semi publishing industry get together to form what may very well be the strongest editorial team in our industry. Best of luck from the entire global PR team at Impress Labs (formerly Impress PR)
