Suss Expands Back-end Portfolio, Buys Tamarack

Suss MicroTec (Garching Germany) said it has acquired Tamarack Scientific Co. Inc. (Corona, Calif.) , a maker of UV projection lithography systems as well as laser micro-structuring tools for the advanced packaging, 3D integration, MEMS, and LED markets.

Suss MicroTec will pay $9.34 million plus an additional amount depending on revenues for the next three years.

The German company provides imprint lithography systems and a wide variety of other tools for wafer-level packaging. In a press release, Suss said it is “pursuing a consolidation strategy in the semiconductor back-end equipment industry by complementing its exposure technology portfolio with projection lithography.”

Frank P. Averdung, CEO of Suss MicroTec, said, “With this acquisition, we enlarge our company’s lithography segment by adding a new product line and core technology, both of which are highly complementary to our existing exposure capability.”

Courtney Sheets, CEO of Tamarack Scientific, said the deal provides a global sales and service infrastructure as well as a solid financial position. “Together with Suss MicroTec, we can now expand our lithography and laser processing systems business faster and more successfully in our target markets,” Sheets said.
