TSMC Names Three as Co-Chief Operating Officers

Morris Chang is still the chairman and CEO at TSMC, but who will follow the 81-year-old Chang became somewhat more clear when the TSMC board of directors named three senior executives as co-chief operating officers.

The moves, made public on March 2nd and effective today (March 5), put the spotlight on three men: Shang-yi Chiang, executive vice president of R&D, operations head Mark Liu, and C.C. Wei, in charge of business development.

The board decision creates a three-in-a-box strategy, with the three executives – Chang, Liu, and Wei — reporting directly to Chang. “All other organizations will report to the three executive VPs and co-COOs,” the board said.

Chang founded TSMC in 1986, and has remained at the helm since then, with the exception of a brief period several years ago when then-heir apparent Rick Tsai was named president. Even then, Chang remained chairman, which in Taiwan is the executive with most of the legal responsibility for a company’s health and welfare. Tsai is now chairman and CEO of two subsidiary startups: TSMC Solar Ltd. and TSMC Solid State Lighting Ltd.
